Making Heritage with Bark Cloth

Making Heritage with Bark Cloth

Workshop

22 June 2022

As part of the A Level conference on 22nd June, How ‘Humanities Can Save the World’, the Centre of Austronesian Studies will be holding a workshop to bring textile production back to Preston!

Join our workshop to learn how to beat bark from the Paper Mulberry Tree into cloth and sew it into accessories. ‘Making Heritage with Bark Cloth’ seeks to invite the public to take a hands on approach in learning the cultural significance of Barkcloth (Tapa Cloth)! Indigenous bark cloth maker, Mr Siki, from the Amis community on Taiwan’s east coast will be teaching Tapa cloth production over two workshops taking place throughout the day.
The workshop will include participants hammering the bark from the Paper Mulberry tree into Tapa cloth and sewing it together to form a bag or other small accessory.

This will be followed up by a public guest talk by anthropologist and documentary filmmaker, Professor Futuru Tsai.
This workshop will be taking place as part of the Conference: ‘How Humanities can save the world!’.

Guest Talk with Prof Futuru Tsai

02:30pm – 03:00pm

“What do you want to leave for our community? The revitalization of making barkcloth and its socio-cultural meaning in E’tolan Amis community in south East Taiwan.”

  • In this talk, Futuru will introduce the barkcloth’s functions and making process in the ‘Etolan Amis community. Like many other Austronesian-speaking peoples globally, the indigenous Amis People in E’tolan also had the heritage of making barkcloth. However, it had almost disappeared at the beginning of 20 century. Several Amis elders have been dedicated to revitalizing the art of making barkcloth since the end of the 20th century. They followed their blurred memories of when their childhood watching their grandparents making barkcloth, tried and error, and finally found a way back into the old traditions. Furthermore, one of them, Panay, the traditional leader of the community from 2000 to 2010, worked with his wife Yisak. They have been creating new functions of barkcloth and teaching many younger generations to save and develop the barkcloth traditions as artworks and creative cultural industries.
No registration needed to attend this talk. Please come to HA250 at 2:30pm to attend.
