Lecture Bio:

This lecture will reflect on one of Bruce’s last publications that appeared in the International Journal of Taiwan Studies (IJTS), in which he assessed the broader context of the Dutch colonization of Taiwan in the 17th century. It will consist of three parts. I open up the lecture with briefly situating Bruce’s research within Taiwan Studies, followed by a discussion of his principled take on 17th Dutch Formosa historical interpretation. The final part elaborates this perspective against the background of updated research trends on the early modern history of Taiwan.

Speaker: Dr Ann Heylen

Ann Heylen is professor at the Department of Taiwan Culture, Languages and Literature (TCLL) at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) (2008 -) and currently serves as the Executive Director of the International Taiwan Studies Center of NTNU.

Bruce Jacobs:

This Lecture is sponsored in memoriam to the late Bruce Jacobs. Bruce Jacobs was a professor of Asian Languages and Studies and Director of the Taiwan Research Unit at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
